History

The Department of Commerce was started in the year 1993 when Commerce as an educational choice was a distant one for women.  However, today when women have scaled new frontiers in education, the Commerce Department has a prime place in this college in terms of both student strength and faculty size.   The department was elevated to a PG centre with the introduction of  M.Com  from the academic year 2016-17.  It has  9 Sanctioned lecturer posts. The students occupancy rate is more than 1/3of the total strength of the College.

Learning Process

 The Department places emphasis on hands on learning through expert lecturers, seminars, fairs, workshops, field trips, powerpoint presentations, virtual classes, etc.,  the Department regularly organizes a variety of co curricular activities in addition to class room teaching for promoting  active learning by students. Besides the Department organizes Certificate Courses in various fields as a part of skill development.

Infrastructure

The Department is equipped with computer lab supported by 23 computers, one LCD projector in the Computer lab and 11 type writing machines and one Over Head Projector, which helps students to learn type writing, shorthand and computer skills as well. The department has library having around 400 books. These books are regularly issued to the needy students and faculty.

Employment opportunities

B.Com graduates have potential to get employment in Banking & Insurance sector, Teaching, Marketing, Secretarial Support, Accountants in Industries and Software Companies, Software Developers, Stock Exchanges, Business Analysts etc.,

It is the practice of the Department to offer Certificate Courses to students to enhance their skills.

1.  CERTIFICATE COURSE IN TYPEWRITING KEY BOARD TECHNIQUES

  This is one of the best practices of the Department. The department has 10 typewriters.  Most of the students belong to marginalized sections of the community and they lack computer knowledge too.  Keeping this in view and to make the students comfortable with key board, Typewriting Key Board Techniques are introduced.  The duration of the  course is of 45 days. The course is being conducted through out the year in batches of 30 each.  After the end of the course the students are comfortable to type the matter without mistakes.  Students are awarded with certificates after taking a test.

2.   CERTIFICATE COURSE IN TALLY

There is no life to Commerce graduates without knowledge of computerized Accounting. Keeping this in view, the Department conducts  Certificate Course in Tally ERP -9 in association with Coastal Prosoft , ECIL-ECIT Centre, Hyderabad in the College Campus under MoU. The duration of the course is 45 days.  Students are given hands on training by an experienced Tally faculty of Coastal Prosoft.  Certificates are awarded by the ECIL-ECIT Centre.

3.   CERTIFICATE COURSE IN BASIC MONEY MANAGEMENT

Commerce Department conducted Certificate Course in Basic Money Management with a view to make the students learn about Accounting, Cash flows, Budgeting, budget process and Investing.  The students are able to prepare budget using imaginary figures and the ways to invest the saving in a better way. This course is conducted in association with Coastal Prosoft.  The duration of the course is 45 days.

4.   MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING

The Department entered into MOU with Coastal Prosoft ( ECIL – ECIT authorized Centre) to provide training/Diploma courses in software and hardware skills free of cost to students belonging to BC/SC/ST from 2014.  Twenty five students in 2014, 30 students in 2015 of this College are selected for doing DPCHN (Diploma in PC Hardware & Net working) course and 20 students selected for ADST (Advanced Diploma in Software Technology).  The duration of the Courses are  3 months and 6 months respectively.  Certificates will be awarded by ECIL- ECIT.  Each selected student received a  stipend of Rs.1,500/- p.m. from National Schedule Caste Development and Finance Corporation (NSDFC), New Delhi during the course period.

5.   SAMANA - the Commerce Fair

With a view to tap the latent talents of B.Com. students, the Department of Commerce made an attempt to expose the inherent skills of the students through organizing Commerce Fair titled SAMANA    Its main objectives are:

·         To showcase the latent skills of commerce students

·         To create business atmosphere

·         To create awareness on business related issues like working of banks, business ideas, working of ATMs, Consumeris                         Starting of new small scale industry etc.

·         To enlarge the students in selling activity viz. selling of goods and services so as to encourage them to generate income

·         To improve marketing skills of students

·         To make them self confident and feel they are not second to none

There is an uproar response from the students.  They felt very happy and motivated to do something on their own.  Entrepreneur skills also developed.

6.      FIELD VISITS

Students are being taken to Industries / Banks to give practical exposure every year.  They are taken to GMR power, Kakinada, Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, Ruchi Soya Industries, Mahila Bank, BHEL_BHPV, Visakhapatnam, Sugar factory etc.,in the past 5 years.  This will enable them to learn practically how process costing takes place at every process.  Besides they are exposed to  the accounting practices of Industries. 

7.      ADVANCED LEARNERS

1.  In view of recent developments, the subjects are revised and new courses like Purchase Management, Agricultural and Rural Marketing, Warehouse Management were introduced.  There is no availability of study material or books as such.  So, Advanced learners are given the task of preparing study material in Telugu  under the guidance of faculty and this material is circulated to all other students.  They downloaded the material from National Digital Library  and Shodh Gandga and took the help of concerned faculty in translating the material.  

2.  Advanced Learners are given the task of preparing Model Question Papers for circulation among the students.

8.      WORKSHOPS

The Department conducts District and National  Level Workshops for academic development of students as well as faculty.

BEST PRACTICES

USE OF SAPLINGS INSTEAD OF BOUQUETS

The department started a new and best practice of honoring the guests with saplings instead of bouquets  in various celebrations . This practice is one of the good tools of environment protection.

 BASIC MEDICAL AID

1.       It is observed that many students are asking permission to leave the premises due some ailments like fever, stomach ache, head ache, cold, wounds etc.   Keeping this in view the Department started Basic Medical Aid and Providing medicines when they are in need during the college hours.

2.       Supply of Sanitary Napkins to needy students free of cost during college hours to stop students to go home in the middle.

REWARDS TO CLASS TOPPERS

The main objective of this activity is to increase the competitive spirit among the students.  As rewards are proposed beforehand the toppers as well as the close competitors may pay more concentration to get good marks.  Other students may also try to get the first Place.  This activity is treated as a strong tool to encourage the hard workers.

DEPARTMENTAL LIBRARY

1.       Forwarding specimen copies of subject books  supplied by the publisher to departmental library.

2.       The Department is maintaining a Departmental Library with around 500 books.  Every  year, some publishers  used to visit the Department  and  supply some Specimen copies of  subject books.  Those books are forwarded  to  Departmental library.  

CHARITIES

1.       It is the practice of Commerce Department to provide financial support to Srishti Foundation which is meant for feeding aged persons. This is in practice for the past 4 years

2.       The faculty members extends  financial assistance to students towards purchase of books, payment of examination fee, commuting charges etc..
