About the Department
The Department of Zoology was established in the year 1962 with a noble vision of promoting women education and Empowerment. The department offered B. Sc programme with Zoology Main in English & Telugu media till 1988. From 1999 onwards it began to offer B. Sc as Common Core programme with Zoology, Botany & Chemistry combination in Telugu medium. The Department has adopted Choice Based Credit System and grading system since 2015-2016. After attaining autonomous status in 2015-16, the department has been actively involved in curriculum design and development process through Board of Studies as per UGC norms, duly considering the feedback obtained from the stakeholders. By aligning with both local and global needs, the department has commenced a Market-Oriented programme B. Sc Aquaculture Technology with Zoology and Chemistry combination during the year 2018-19 with an intake of 30, to create skilled professionals in Fisheries and Aquaculture who can enhance productivity, increase sustainable practices, and generate employment contributing to National development. During 2020-2021 the Department started offering B. Sc CBZ in English medium with an intake of 30, in addition to the existing B. Sc CBZ (Telugu medium) with 40 seats. During 2021-2022, as per State Government policy the Department started offering B. Sc CBZ only in English medium with an intake of 60. From 2023-2024 onwards, adopting NEP 2020, the department started offering B. Sc (Honours) Zoology (EM) as Single Major Programme with sanctioned intake of 40 seats. The department offers Zoology and Aquaculture as minor courses.
The Department has a good ecosystem that ensures multifaceted development of the students. Since its inception, the department has been striving to foster global competencies among the students, instilling value system and quest for excellence. It emphasizes on Outcome Based Education and takes care that the stakeholders achieve the stated objectives and outcomes. It adopts good pedagogy to ensure better classroom management through quality teaching and progressive learning. The department integrates Information and Communication Technology for effective curriculum transaction. It has computers, internet, and LCD projector with a good number of ICT resources in addition to the digital and virtual classroom facility available in the college. In tune with NEP 2020, the department has integrated Community Service Projects (4 credits), Short-term internship (4 credits) and semester Internships (12 credits) into the curriculum from 2020-21 admitted batch onwards.
The department has a strong Mentor- Mentee system to take care of the academic, physical, and psychological aspects of the students. Bridge course is offered for new entrants to bridge the gap in their knowledge levels. Remedial Coaching is provided for handholding of slow learners. The Department encourages student centric learning by conducting group discussions, seminars, quiz programmes, debate competitions etc. Experiential learning is promoted through field trips, study projects and extension activities. It organizes guest lectures by inviting persons eminent in the field of Zoology and Aquaculture. It ensures fair evaluation process, discusses the performance of students in the internal examinations and provides guidance for improvement. It mentors the students in progressing to higher education and getting placements. Relevant days are celebrated to instill the scientific temperament among the students.
Environmental consciousness is promoted by offering a course on Environmental Education, Certificate courses, through involvement in programmes such as Vanam- Manam, Clean and Green, by observing Plastic Free Day, Vehicle Free Day, Coastal Clean-up Day etc. The Department has signed an MoU with Zoology Department of PR College(A), Kakinada and conducted a ‘Student Exchange Programme’ with a duration of one week during 2021-2022 and Faculty Exchange Programme from the academic year 2022-23.
The Department of Zoology has a laboratory equipped with specimens, charts, permanent slides, models, microscopes, and other equipment. The Department has a fine museum with a good number of native and exotic specimens. The departmental library has reference books, text-books, question banks utilized by faculty members and students. The department also provides handouts and study material for the benefit of the students.
