BRIEF HISTORY OF HOME SCIENCE DEPARTMENT:         

The Department of Home Science was established in the year 1962-63. Initially the department has offered the course in both Intermediate and Under Graduation levels. But now only UG  course is offered. The curriculum was formulated to suit the needs of both urban as well as rural girl students. The department of Home Science has touched a significant milestone in 2013, by completing fifty glorious years of fruitful functioning and it is functioning with pronounced academic spirit, and extension might.From the academic year 2022-23,the department is offering B.Sc Honours programme in Home Science with Food and Nutrition as Minor course. The present strength of the department is 69 as against the sanctioned strength of 90. Faculty members of the department keep abreast of the latest developments in their respective field of study by attending Seminars, Workshops and Refresher courses. They act as subject experts, resource persons, and consultants for various Government and Non Government Organisations. The alumni of the department are settled in versatile professions such as CDPOs, Extension Officers, Dieticians, Preschool Managers, Interior Designers, apparel designers, community coordinators for development programmes , Quality Control Officers in Food Industries etc. Some of the alumni have grown into entrepreneurs . Some of the Alumni  also acted  as the members of the College Planning and Development Committee and Internal Quality Assurance Cell.

Our Vision :To impart knowledge, skills and competencies for the empowerment of girl students and thus contribute for a healthy family and society.

Our Mission :The mission of the department is to equip, enable and empower young women  in rural and urban households through teaching and extension activities which will help to construct healthy society and mark  their significance at national and international level.

               B.Sc Home Science is a course that gives students exposure to real life situations and skills required to play their active role in building up of a healthy family and society as informed citizens. The course is designed to train the students to increase professional skills, develop insights into home and family living and enter a wide range of career options. Home Science offers a wide range of subjects at the UG level and also inculcates entrepreneurial skills among the students. The Undergraduate courses in Home Science includes

A pass in Intermediate examination with Arts and Sciences and Vocational Course CGDM

The department is well established with three class rooms, one staff room, Nutrition Laboratory,Department Library and other necessary equipments to conduct practical sessions.

  • One Day Skill Enhancement Programme for Preschool Teachers on “Holistic Development of Preschoolers through Thematic Approach”, sponsored by UGC
  • State level workshop on "Millets-The Super Foods" to crate awareness on the nutritional importance of millets
  • Certificate courses in Maggam work,Preparation of Handicrafts,Chocolate Making,Madhubani painting
  • Workshop for Anganwadi teachers on "Importance of Breast Feeding " and Mothers Milk Bank in collaboration with Lions Club sankalp,Kakinada
  • 10 day programme on "Adolescent Health and Wellness" in Municipal Girls High SChool,Kakinada
  • 3 day Workshop on Career Guidance and Life Skills for the final year students
  • Skill Development Workshop on "Puppet Making and Puppetry" 
  • Organized a Food Stall in JNTUK,Kakinada with Nutritious Millet Recipes on the occasion of "Eat Right India" programme

  • Invited Lecture on "Suicide Ideation among Youth and Measures for prevention"in collaboration with Mythri Womens Organization,Kakinada
  • Awareness sessions on "Hazards of  ewaste and its safe disposal"
  • Handloom Day celebration to create awareness on Indian Handlooms 
  • Invited Lecture on "Women in Leadership" in collaboration with Lions Club Sankalp,Kakinada
