DEPARTMENT OF MICROBIOLOGY:

Brief History of the department (History and Brief activities taken up by the Department)The department of microbiology was established in the academic year 1998-99 when restructured courses were first established in selected government colleges. Microbiology with allied subjects botany and chemistry has sanctioned strength of 20 students. At present the microbiology laboratory is fully equipped with instruments such as microscopes, laminar air flow, oven, incubator, refrigerator, and sufficient glassware. The department is fully furnished. The department has its own library with books in microbiology both of Indian and foreign authors.

The sanctioned post is one which is filled. The course we offer in Microbiology.

Activities Taken Up by the Department

Study tours and filed trips - the students are taken to various institutions to give them practical exposure

Study projects – final year students carry of study projects under the guidance of staff.

Guest Lectures: the department also has guest lectures by eminent Microbiologists.

Teaching Practices

Every year we prepare academic plans. Every Staff member will follow the plan for completion of syllabus .The department of Microbiology takes up regular teaching, seminars, assignments, monthly tests, group discussions, Quiz, Seminar, carrier guidance and debates as teaching practices.

• For better understanding of topics all the topics are covered by e- learning. In which the students are shown power point presentation, Animations, videos are shown.
• For final year students study projects are assigned in order to inculcate interest in research and higher learning at U.G level. Students are thoroughly guided by the concerned for successful completion of their projects and acquire themselves with research methodology.
• For average students are assignments are given on difficult topics and they are made to understand them. The remaining students are given assignments on important topics.

• Guest lectures and extension lectures are regularly arranged every year.
• After admission students are assessed in the classes by putting class tests .continuous evaluation is done by conducting tests and giving assignments. Question banks and a number of model question papers are made available to the students in the dept. library for ready reference.
• The completed topic would be repeated as and when any of the students expresses difficulty in understanding particular topic.
• Latest information and recent trends in the subject are provided by referring to the internet and Wikipedia.
• The microbiology dept. is located in the administrative block in the first floor. It has an area of 40/20 feet.
• EQUIPMENTS – List enclosed
• The dept. has acquired the best instruments for conducting practicals. These instruments are utilized to sensitize students in R& D technology in microbiology.
• Teacher counseling system is of immense use in knowing background of the students so as to enable the extended support academically and sometimes financially poor students.
• Regular parent teacher meetings are conducted.
• Slip tests are conducted for low achievers and remedial coaching classes are conducted outside college hours.
• The maintenance of labs and ordering for the equipment and chemicals is done regularly with the help of special committee which is constituted at the beginning of the academic year.
• Academic review meetings are conducted regularly with the academic board and IQAC review report submitted regularly. Guest lectures, seminars field trips and important activities are thoroughly discussed by the staff and planned for the academic year.
• library is equipped with both many Reference and Text Books.
